The reason and solution for painful emotions

Why does the psyche need to be healed in the first place? Why are people so messed up? Why do they have so many anxieties, so much anger, depression and repetitive thoughts?

The original reason is our ignorance to our deeper self. As explained in Step 1 of the book All Is Well, in

the absence of self-knowledge your true identity, reasoning and the search for wellbeing are deposited into the hands of the ego. It’s given the job to protect you and make you happy. Since the ego is wildly underequipped for this task, and has the wrong resources and programming to work with, the result is a dysfunctional structure powered by protection and survival. The ego’s understanding of how to do reach wellbeing is to barricade you from any threat or form of pain, internally and externally.

But this doesn’t work. Pain is inevitable in life. Every person faces it.

Pain in various forms might be inevitable, but that’s not the problem at all. In itself, it’s not suffering. It is only your reaction to it which creates suffering. That is the real problem. That suffering manifests in two principal ways:

1. Your interpretation of what arises generates an unlimited amount of suffering. That is the commentating team and the cycle of reactivity we spoke of previously in the book.

2. The strategy of desperate avoidance creates those storages of suppressed pain, which in turn create a whole structure of dysfunctionality.

Your reaction is the problem. Therefore, changing your reaction is the solution.
